Statewide GSA to kick off Oct. 15

FERNDALE - In an effort coordinated by Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center, students from around the metro Detroit area and the state will gather together to create a Regional Gay Straight Alliance at a kick-off meeting on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 1-3 p.m. at Affirmations, then continue meeting the first Saturday of each month.

"The Regional GSA is an excellent way to not only unify local Gay Straight Alliances, but to create an even larger impact statewide," said Cass Varner, Youth Services Coordinator at Affirmations.

The Regional Gay Straight Alliance, the first of its kind in Michigan, will be a catalyst for empowering LGBT and allied youth to take action through activism. Michigan currently has 86 active Gay Straight Alliances throughout the state.

The Regional Gay Straight Alliance will be located at Affirmations, 195 W. 9 Mile Rd. in Ferndale. A catered lunch will be provided for the kickoff meeting. For more information about this or other youth-related programs, call Youth Services Coordinator Cassandra Varner at 248-398-7105 x14.
